Michael Smith claimed a 5-3 win to begin proceedings at the Grand Slam of Darts against Glen Durrant and he was pleased afterwards to claim the victory despite having to dig deep.
Smith admitted that from his perspective, he should have won it easier but that a win is a win for him against a classy operator who was expected to push him all the way.
"It's nice to win," said Smith, who averaged almost 100.
"I should have won it easier but missed a few doubles, but I stuck in there and dug deep so I'm quite happy."
