Alan Soutar left it late again as he surged past Jose de Sousa in a decider and will face Callan Rydz later today for a spot in the Quarter-Finals of the PDC
World Darts Championship on debut.
Soutar spoke afterwards and said that like in the Suljovic game, he could see De Sousa fading and so took advantage.
"In my head I felt I should have been more in control of that. He didn't turn up at all so I'll take that all day long," said Soutar post match.
"It's so hard to forget that you've blown a great chance to go 1-0 up in the first set. The game against Mensur and the game against Jose is the same, you can see him forcing a 59, a 57, a 58 so of course you feed off that."
Not thinking of further rewards or quitting job
With an extended run comes potential further TV tournament berths and if he goes far enough, ultimate rewards such as the World title and the Premier League.
But Soutar isn't thinking about quitting his job anytime soon saying that it can change at an instant.
"That's my job, I'm a firefighter. I'll be a firefighter for at least 2023, 2024, 2025. I want to get to my 20 year point then see how well you can do at darts because I can't give up my job to play darts because it can change so quick."
"I'm not at that level yet. The finances are great and the stuff that comes with it is great. I might buy a boat but I'm just taking it bit by bit. That's not a decision I have to make it right away."
He left the post match press conference with a message to the field that he has to be the one to be defeated.
"I don't fear any of the top players, they've got to beat me. End of the story."
