Raymond van Barneveld was nearly beaten at his own game so to speak as he sealed a 6-4 win over Maik Kuivenhoven at the Czech Darts Open. He sealed a spot in the final day of action against his compatriot who was given a call up this morning and only arrived at the venue shortly before he played.
Kuivenhoven bizarrely given that he had to fly over was not only in the PDC Europe issue polo but also was using the Raymond van Barneveld darts that he bought off the merch desk. So there was the potential situation that Barney would get beat by his own darts anyone could buy. Albeit he did not.
He started well with them given he had likely never picked them up prior to tonight. But he missed a dart to hold from 62 and Van Barneveld hit double five for 1-0 and an early break.
Kuivenhoven hit a superb 177 to leave double 14 and as Van Barneveld missed 64, Kuivenhoven returned only to hammer in a double nine instead. He moved over though to double five for 1-1 to break back.
Kuivenhoven missed 76 for 2-1 to hold but returned with Van Barneveld missing 114 for 2-1 and hit double 10 to lead once more. Van Barneveld though held with a 108 checkout to make it 2-2. But Kuivenhoven continued to hold throw and made it 3-2. But Van Barneveld thumped in a superb 147 checkout as he aimed to derail the Kuivenhoven train at 3-3.
That he did not as Kuivenhoven made it 4-3. He missed two big numbers for the finish to go 5-3 up but returned anyway only to miss two darts. Van Barneveld was offered a steal at 112 and he took it for 4-4.
Kuivenhoven started to fade from there as Van Barneveld broke to make it 5-4 and he sealed the win from there to end his fellow Dutchman's hopes. As two more also plotted their course through.
Niels Zonneveld swept aside an out of sorts Dave Chisnall who was poor in his role as top seed this weekend. and averaged just 85 with no 180's as the Dutchman took his chance.
Zonneveld went into a 2-1 lead in the early going. But perhaps would’ve felt Chisnall was there for the taking given that he was only averaging 77 and was struggling to score to his full capability. Chisnall was unable to get a shot at 114 to hold and shook his head as Zonneveld took aim at 82.
He went the bull route and missed it and then also missed double 20 for 3-1 and Chisnall got away with it. His scoring clicked for a moment but he miscounted on the 72 and this allowed Zonneveld held for 3-2. It was a sense of befuddlement for Chisnall as he continued to perform erratic as Zonneveld got stronger. He was clutch as Chisnall was missing dart after dart. He hit a 78 checkout to go 4-2 up.
He held throw to go one away and Chisnall missed darts to stay in it and Zonneveld struck for a 6-2 victory.
While Gian van Veen also won through against James Wade. Van Veen as he duly noted lost this time last year to Wade in the semi-finals of the European Championship when he looked to be cruising. But cruise he did to victory in the opener this evening as he sealed a 6-2 win against ‘The Machine’.
‘GVV The Giant’ sealed the victory with a 97.4 average and a high checkout of 140. Aside from the end when he struggled to get the job done initially, it was very much the Dutchman’s game to lose as he sealed the win.
Wade opened the tie with a 76 checkout to break the throw. But Van Veen certainly had a catalyst as he produced a 140 checkout to level up at 1-1. He broke back and then went into the lead to erase the early break. From there, he hit double four for 3-1. Wade broke back but it was his last leg of the match as Van Veen turned it on.
He didn’t allow Wade back for a makable 60 and pinned 54 for a 4-2 lead before holding throw for 5-2. Like alluded to he stumbled over the line following that but it is very much job done.

𝗕𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗬 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗦 𝗔 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 👁️🐅 Raymond van Barneveld fends off a valiant effort from Maik Kuivenhoven to seal a 6-4 victory, with his opponent having lost his luggage after receiving a late call-up to the event and used a set of Barney's darts! #CDO24
