Van der Voort gives update on Van Gerwen operation: ''He needs to take it easy for a while''

Michael van Gerwen had to pull out of last week's World Cup of Darts at the last minute. Last Monday, 'Mighty Mike' underwent scheduled surgery on his teeth.

On Wednesday, Van Gerwen then deemed himself not fit enough to start the Nations tournament in Frankfurt. It was unclear exactly what Van Gerwen's surgery entailed, but his close friend Vincent van der Voort came up with additional explanations during a broadcast on Viaplay.

Van der Voort said Van Gerwen had four wisdom teeth extracted. In addition, an incision was made at the top of the teeth.

''There's all swelling in his mouth now and it's all blue. So that one has to take it easy for a while,'' Van der Voort said. In addition, he revealed that the three-time world champion has received braces.
