Michael van Gerwen is set for a blockbuster clash with World Number One and rival,
Peter Wright on Sunday evening in the Quarter-Finals of the
German Darts Championship.
Van Gerwen was pushed again this time against Martin Lukeman but found his way through as a 6-4 victor against the in-form 'Smash'.
Van Gerwen missed his first opportunities on double but had multiple chances with Lukeman back not on a finish and he took an early lead. But Lukeman who looked well up for the tie pinned double 20 to make it 1-1.
He missed bull for a 121 break and Van Gerwen second time around hit double 10 to make it 2-1. The former missed 107 on double 10 but break darts passed MVG by and Lukeman made it 2-2.
A 15-dart hold saw Van Gerwen make it 3-2 and he made his move with a 74 checkout to break. He was getting frustrated though and Lukeman rose to the occasion pinning a 13-darter for a break to make it 4-3. He added a 60 checkout to hold and make it 4-4.
Lukeman had a dart fall on the floor leaving him only 124 and Van Gerwen snuck in double 10 to hold at make it 5-4. ‘Smash’ had to hold to stay in the tournament but MVG left 81 after nine and pinned double 13 for the match.
While in a game full of holds, Peter Wright held the pivotal break as he sealed it 6-4 against Krzysztof Ratajski with a 97.6 average and 55% on the doubles.
Wright had the chance to break early on but went inside double 11 to bust his shot and Ratajski made it 3-2 as the holds continued. Ratajski pinned 124 for a 12-darter to make it 4-3.
Again it was a hold as Wright made it 4-4 on double 16. Ratajski didn’t get a look at 96 and Wright finally broke to go one away at 5-4. He finished it off by missing 110 on double 16 but then returning for the same target after Ratajski missed 112 for a break back.
