Van Gerwen puts Aspinall comeback down to stomach cramps: “Literally and figuratively playing with clenched buttocks”

Michael van Gerwen has won the World Grand Prix for the sixth time in his career. Mighty Mike was too strong for Nathan Aspinall in the final 5-3.

Van Gerwen took a 4-0 lead, but still almost saw Aspinall come back. "I also thought it was done at 4-0," Van Gerwen opened to Viaplay. "But halfway through the match I suddenly got severe stomach cramps, from then on it was really literally and figuratively playing with clenched buttocks."

"It was also awkward, the crowd put themselves fully behind Aspinall and started booing me. So you see him getting stronger set after set. Fortunately, I then did the right things at the right time to still take the win," said the 33-year-old Dutchman.

For Van Gerwen, this is the sixth final victory at the World Grand Prix. "I come from very far back, especially the past two years it didn't go great. So this win does a lot of good. I am still not reaching my very best level, but still I already won some big tournaments this year, that only promises a lot of good for the rest of the year."
