Michael van Gerwen has qualified for the last sixteen at the
European Darts Open at the expense of
Raymond van Barneveld. 'Mighty Mike' won the Double Dutch clash at the
European Tour tournament in Leverkusen 6-4.
Both Dutchmen showed excellent levels. Van Gerwen reached an average of 108, compared to 98 for Van Barneveld, who did go 4/7 on the doubles. The only mistake Van Barneveld made, however was fatal. In the 10th leg, 'Barney' was broken after spurning chances to hold and this proved to be his undoing.
Ricardo Pietreczko caused a shock but delight for the home crowd by eliminating
Peter Wright. The two-time world champion missed six matchdarts before Pietreczko managed to take his second match dart to send the crowd into raptures.
