Michael van Gerwen showed himself to be a sporting loser after he lost 6-1 to Luke Littler on Sunday night. Van Gerwen recorded an average of a whopping 112.19, but that only earned him one leg.
Van Gerwen opened the match with a 13-darter, then Littler went on and on with a 12-darter and a 13-darter. In the fourth leg, Van Gerwen missed a dart on the bullseye before Littler made it 3-1 with a 106 checkout.
In the fifth leg, Van Gerwen missed two more darts on the dice. Littler took advantage again and made it 4-1 with a 13-darter. 'The Nuke' then gave Van Gerwen no chance to get back in the match and closed with a 14-darter and an 11-darter.
Van Gerwen's average was the highest losing average ever on the Euro Tour. Moreover, Littler and Van Gerwen also managed to improve a Euro Tour record together. 'The Nuke' himself had an average of 110.57, making them together the highest combined average ever at a Euro Tour match.
Van Gerwen already gave Littler applause and hearty congratulations on stage but came backstage with another playful response. He had a picture taken of himself and Littler, with 'Mighty Mike' playfully grabbing his opponent by the neck. ''This is not going to happen again. Fantastic game by Luke Littler, what a talent,'' the photo read.
