Michael van Gerwen is recovering well from his major dental surgery. Via his socials, 'Mighty Mike' announced that he is feeling well and ready to pick up the darts again next week.
The 35-year-old from Vlijmen went directly under the knife in late July a day after losing the World Matchplay final against Luke Humphries (18-15). As in 2023, Van Gerwen had to undergo surgery on his teeth. ''They are going to break my upper and lower jaw and re-set them. My upper jaw they will take out 6 millimeters forward and my lower jaw they will put back just 3 millimeters," he previously told
in conversation with the Algemeen Dagblad.
Via Instagram, Van Gerwen announced that the surgery went well. ''The surgery went well, and I’m feeling good! Ready to pick up the darts again next week at the Pro Tour. Thanks for all the support during this time. Now, it’s time to get back to work!,'' said the three-time world champion.
The current world number three previously expressed the expectation that he could re-enter the Players Championship tournaments at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes on August 21 and 22. So with his post on Instagram, Van Gerwen is confirming his earlier intention.
Van Gerwen did not travel to 'Down Under' to compete in the World Series tournaments in Australia and New Zealand. Although 'Mighty Mike' missed out on a nice pocket money, he could use the time to unwind. ''It's been quite an eventful few years. Then it's good to take a step back. I had an operation last year, the year before that I had surgery on my hand and I have two children. That also changes a lot in your life. And we can keep it under wraps, but sports-wise of course things aren't going the way I want them to. This year I have already lost three tournaments. That's the reality and we have to work on that, because if you just like it all, you won't get better. Sitting still is not an option'', he told AD earlier.
The Pro Tour tournaments in Milton Keynes kick off a busy autumn season. Thirteen more Players Championship tournaments, five Euro Tours and six major television tournaments will be played in the coming months.
