Wade speaks on 'fond memories' of winning European Championship: 'It meant a lot to me'

James Wade claimed the European Championship title with victory last year against Simon Whitlock and he will be back aiming to defend his crown in Gottingen.
It was Wade's first major title since 2014 and one that was very much welcome for 'The Machine' and he has fond memories of winning it.
He added that he felt emotional after it due to having some tough times in his career and claiming victory as a result was a sweet moment.
In terms of this year, he says that his focus is on giving a good performance and showing everybody what he knows he is capable of.
"I do have fond memories of winning this event last year, it meant a lot to me," said Wade, who hit a nine-dart finish on the European Tour in March.
“I'd won TV titles before but I'd never made the most of them and that one was extra special because it was for Arthur.
"I felt emotional after I won it. I've been through some tough times in my career and winning this last year was a really sweet moment after coming through it all.
"But that's gone now and my focus is on this weekend and giving the best performance I can. I'm a dangerous player and I know what I'm capable of.

- Many fans had a sour taste in their mouth by the end of this match. Mike was cruising to victory, playing beautiful darts, when the whistling started in earnest, particularly on his doubles. You could see in Mike's face that it was really affecting his concentration. The referee should have asked for order, just to show that the whistling is unacceptable, and Luke Littler could also have done his part to quieten down the crowd instead of "taking full advantage.:" I put that down to his age though. He needs some good advice on this from his management team and/or more seasoned players. It's got to be about who's best on the night, not who is being harassed by the crowd. Luke Littler played well to get back into the game and win, but it was a hollow victory. If he goes on to win the tournament, that triumph too will be tainted because of this match.
