Peter Wright was surprisingly eliminated in the third round at the last World Darts Championship by Kim Huybrechts (4-1). The outgoing world champion played a mediocre match against the Belgian with an average of 91 and a finishing percentage of 32 per cent.
A few weeks later, however, Wright is back in positive spirits. The colourful Scot appeared in front of Sport1's camera during an exhibition tournament in Neu-Ulm to look back at his disappointing performance at Alexandra Palace.
''I just didn't have the right preparation,'' Wright acknowledged. ''It was difficult with Jo (who was hospitalised for a long time in November). It was only two days before the World Championship that she was all right. And then it's just not enough time to prepare properly,'' said the two-time world champion.
In mid-November, Joanne Wright was hospitalised after complications following her gallbladder operation. Joanne has since returned home, and 'Snakebite' has big plans for the future, he revealed with a laugh.
"I'm still hungry. I won in 2020 and 2022 and had set my sights on becoming world champion in 2024, 2026 and 2028 too. Then I will be world champion five times, in between others will be allowed to win,'' Wright joked.
'That other' this time became Michael Smith, who was too strong for Michael van Gerwen in the final 7-4. Wright remarkably felt sorry for his Dutch rival. ''I watched the final and was happy for Smith. But I felt a bit sorry for Michael van Gerwen. He was the best player of the tournament but did not reach that level in the final,'' Wright assessed.
