Besides
Michael van Gerwen, the new number one of the world
Peter Wright will be at the Rotterdam AHOY on Thursday night during the
Premier League Darts.
Wright was long known as the player who on television almost could not beat the Dutchman. In the meantime the head to heads have grown a little closer. Of the last seven televised matches Snakebite won three, of which the last two were a ranking major.
Van Gerwen's disappearance of dominance has also caused a change in relations behind the scenes. Wright sees that his big rival has become a lot calmer. He was often quite noisy,' he says in conversation with AD. But that is different now. He didn't brag like that anymore."
The last time Van Gerwen won a ranking major was in November 2020. However, Wright thinks Van Gerwen can achieve great success again soon.
"It is possible that he comes back, that it is nice that the high expectations are a bit lower. And that he uses this period to practice a bit more. I heard that he took his dartboard with him on holiday earlier this year. He never did that before, I think."
There is a small chance that Wright and Van Gerwen will face each other on Thursday night during the seventh week of the Premier League Darts.
With the new format, tournaments are played every week. The numbers one and three of the world could possibly meet in the final in Ahoy Rotterdam. Wright is happy with the new format because there are advantages for both the audience and the players.
"You see the people in the audience more involved during the matches. Of course you feel bad when you are out of the tournament, then you have been on stage for a short time.
"But in the previous format of the Premier League, we all played only one game a night, although it was a bit longer. If you do well now, you get three matches. You have the feeling that there is something to gain. If you are the winning type, that is great. And that's me. But the problem is that so are the other seven. Anyone who has a good day can win. You can't slack off for a moment, otherwise you are out'', said the 52-year-old Scot.
