Representing the PDC at the latest World Series of Darts tournament,
Peter Wright is in New York City for the
US Darts Masters. After defeat in the opening round last year, Wright is determined to do better in the Big Apple this time around.
"It's great to be invited again. You know, we're the top players in the world, even though I'm dropping down the rankings a little bit," the Scot says in a pre-tournament conversation with
USA Darts. "It's great to be back here and hopefully it inspires me so I can win this and take that trophy home with me."
Despite his relatively poor start to the year, and a disastrous Premier League Darts campaign that saw the former world champion finish rock bottom of the league table, Wright remains optimistic that it won't be long before he's back at his very best. "We're definitely in all the TV tournaments this year, I'm going to win the World Cup with Gary Anderson for Scotland, so that will put me in the Grand Slam of Darts," Wright says with a smile. "So hopefully, starting here I can kick on, lift this trophy and then go on to the next one."
Whether or not that improvement will be seen with his most recent set of darts remains to be seen however, with Wright famously a notorious tinkerer with his equipment and set up. "It's all about finding that extra two percent," he explains. "That is all it takes sometimes and that can be enough to give you the win. To win the title, that can be what you need. You've got to take the risk because the next set of darts you pick up might be fantastic. They might not, but the best place to try it out is on the stage and under the pressure because it's no good in the practice room.
In the opening round of the US Darts Masters at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City, Wright will face off against home crowd hopeful Alex Spellman.
