Not top favorite Thomas Banks, but the strong-playing Yorick Hofkens won the boys' singles tournament Saturday at the WDF Europe Cup Youth in Vienna.
Participating countries were allowed to send their best youth players for this. The singles tournament started on Thursday and played to the semifinals. Dutchman Pim van Bijnen made it to the last four, but lost 5-1 to Hofkens in the semifinals.
In the other semifinal, Banks narrowly defeated Connor Hopkins (5-4). In the final, Hofkens then prevailed 6-3 against the 16-year-old Banks, who debuted at the UK Open with the PDC earlier this year.
The girls' singles tournament is also over. That tournament did not have a surprising winner. Italy's Aurora Fochesato secured a gold medal by defeating Zehra Gemi 5-2 in the final match.
Single tournament results boys.
