Matthew Edgar will make his debut at the WDF World Championships later this month. Edgar previously made three appearances at the PDC World Championships. Despite injury concerns, he still looks forward with confidence to playing at the iconic
Lakeside Country Club.
Edgar has been struggling with an arm injury for quite some time. "It never went away. It was managed, but it never went away. I get lazy with the management of it so I can only blame myself. I stopped going to treatment and the reason I was doing that, was probably because I'm taking on more media work, so I'm not really athome as much," Edgar told
Online Darts. "It isn't the end of the world. Lakeside's on the horizon and I'm going to be having a schedule that manages it now."
As mentioned, this will be Edgar's first WDF World Championship and the Englishman is greatly looking forward to playing at Lakeside, although he realises due to the injury it won't be easy to come away with the side. "The mental side, that's what you lose. I don't trust myself, I don't believe in myself in certain situations. I overestimate everyone else's ability, while underestimating my own, because I don't feel 100%" he explains. "I can't wait to be involved in again, I'm smiling talking about it. I'm excited, I am looking forward to it and it's just going to be different than how I originally thought, but difference is not always bad and this might actually work out better. One thing that might happen off the back of this, is I might be underestimated and I know full well that if I turn up up and I play my game, I don't think there's a player in there I can lose to."
In all likelihood though, this World Championship will be Edgar's last tournament. "I told Connor Scutt that at the end of my match, whichever one it is, I'm going to throw my darts in the lake," he explains, although due to his media work, it's likely not the last we'll see of Edgar. "I'm so happy working in the media and ultimately I think that's what I wanted more than anything."
The draw for the WDF World Championship will take place next Wednesday. The World Championship itself will start on Friday, November 29, with the final taking place on Sunday, December 8. A cheque for 50,000 pounds is waiting for the winner in the men's tournament.
