Gerwyn Price has spoken out about the current PDC ranking system, following the recent announcement that the prize money for winning the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace will be doubled from £500,000 to £1 million.
The former world champion, who claimed his second Players Championship title of the year on Monday in Leicester with an 8-4 win over Ian White, expressed concern about the impact this increase could have on the PDC Order of Merit.
According to Price, such a significant boost in prize money could distort the world rankings. “It’s only one tournament heavy,” said ‘The Iceman’. "As bad as my last year has been, even though I’ve started well this year, I could go on to win the World Championship and be world number one.”
While the Welshman welcomes the increased prize as a sporting incentive, he believes the distribution of ranking points needs to be thoroughly reviewed. "They’ve upped the Worlds, but they need to up everything else—otherwise, they need to change the points."
Price stressed that the current system is unfair when one tournament victory—no matter how prestigious—can have such a major influence on the rankings. "It’s not fair if someone wins the Worlds and they are world number one for two years. "
The seven-time major-winner concludes with a wink, "I will happily have the million. But they need to change the ranking points.”

I agree. There needs to be a points system and preferably just a rolling one year. World Championship should earn the most points though it can be argued that the current qualification system does see a fair few players qualify from regional country qualifiers who would struggle to hold down a place on the Pro Tour. If prize money won is going to remain as the determining factor for ranking then the World Championship should just consist of the 128 Tour Card Holders. Another option would be to take the World Championship out of the rankings and have it as the stand alone pinnacle that you qualify for by winning certain tournaments or your ranking position, sort of like a GSOD+.
