Jarno Bottenberg was a surprise package 12 months ago but he showed why he shouldn't be underestimated again on Saturday night taking down
Matthew Edgar who was making his
Lakeside debut.
Bottenberg repeats his opening stanza from 12 months ago to get the job done in straight sets and to spoil the long awaited return to the stage for 'The Dartbreak Kid'.
Wearing a shirt inspired by Shawn Michaels and referencing his love of Wrestling, Edgar has spoken at length pre tournament about fulfilling his Lakeside dream then hanging the darts up. With injuries and also a burgeoning media career which keeps Edgar busy, he no longer has the want to chase the PDC dream in particular.
But it will likely be a memory he cherishes despite his early loss. Bottenberg started superbly as he made an electric start. He won the opening set 3-0 with a 13-darter and hit two 180's along the way.
Edgar started to get his scoring boots on and averaged 93 on throw to begin set two but Bottenberg was averaging 107 and hit a 140 and 180 en route to opening the set with a break. He went one away with a 116 checkout for a 15-darter.
Edgar forced a decider in the set but couldn't pin 138 and Bottenberg returned to break back and claim it 3-2.
While Kirsi Viinikainen who has starred in the past on the PDC Women's Series made light work of Amanda Loch in a straight sets win for the Finn.
She won't get an easier task though as she faces of against the favourite by some distance in Beau Greaves in the second round who will go for three in a row this week and likely faces little opposition. It was a performance though from Viinikainen that has only been bettered by Jitka Cisarova.
She pinned a 71 average in winning through as expected and now has the top tie of the next round.
