The World Darts Federation (WDF) on Wednesday came with bad news for participants in the 2024 WDF World Championship at the iconic Lakeside. Once again, there is less prize money to be divided at the biggest tournament at the WDF.
The WDF hosted the first edition of the WDF World Championship at Lakeside in 2022. At that time, the prize fund contained £300,000, which already contrasted sharply with the £2.5 million prize pool at the PDC's World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace. The prize fund was already cut last year, as it was then reduced to £257,000. Now though, only £221,000 of that remains.
Remarkable in this regard is that the WDF has chosen to keep the amount for the winners the same, and just reduce the other amounts. The winner of the men's tournament still gets 50,000. The runner-up now gets 16,000 pounds. So the winner of the men's tournament at Lakeside gets more than three times as much as the losing finalist. Players who lose in the earlier rounds also lose out. The starting money is now 750 pounds, which was 1,000 last year.
In the ladies, a sum of £25,000 awaits the world champion. That amount also corresponds to the winner's cheque in 2023. The runner-up holds only 8,000 pounds, instead of 10,000 last year. The women's field consists of a total of 24 players. The players starting in the first round are guaranteed £750 in prize money.
There is also a boys' and girls' tournament at Lakeside. The winner in the boys' tournament will receive 3,000 pounds, while the winner in the girls' tournament will receive a sum of 1,500 pounds.
