With the BDO World Darts Championship not taking place this month due to the organisation’s demise, DartsNews looks back at classic moments and matches throughout January from the showpiece event.
Onto 1996 we go and it was Steve Beaton who ended up as champion dethroning defending champion Richie Burnett 6-3 in the final.
Beaton was the number one seed and defeated some brilliant names en route to the title including Co Stompé, John Part, Martin Adams and Andy Fordham before defeating 'The Prince of the Wales'.
When darts was played by part-time players. Great to see the Adonis still looking the same today. If you take a look at the players he beat, players that would go on to win it, shows just how hard his draw was. He deserved the right to World Champion, wonder if he thought he'd still be in the top 32 in the PDC some 25 year's later?
