January usually sees the darts continue with the BDO World Championship played. Due to the demise of this organisation, this tournament will no longer be played this year. As a result, DartsNews looks back at some previous finals from the showpiece event on the BDO calendar.
The first edition took place in 1978 in Nottingham. At the time, the prize pool was only £ 10,500 and the tournament was played in legs. The field consisted of 24 players.
Number one Eric Bristow was eliminated in the second round by American darts player Conrad Daniels. It was Leighton Rees and
John Lowe who managed to reach the final. The World Championship final was won 11-7 by Rees, who became the first BDO World Champion.
