Robert Thornton took the title on Saturday night in a special week of the
MODUS Super Series. In a specially themed week, participants had to start all legs with a double as well and ending on them.
Twelve participants started the Double Trouble Week. The best six players from the first five days of play met Saturday divided into two pools on the final night. Thornton started the final night in Group A. 'The Thorn' lost his first match against
Ted Evetts (3-2), but did win his second group match against Neil Duff (3-1). Evetts won the mutual duel with Duff (3-0) and advanced to the semifinals as number one.
Richie Burnett became the pool winner in Group B. The Welshman dealt with Adam Lipscombe (3-1) and Andreas Harrysson (3-1), while Harrysson was 3-0 too strong for Lipscombe.
In the first semifinal, Evetts won 3-0 over Harrysson, then Thornton triumphed 3-1 in the second semifinal against Burnett. That made Evetts and Thornton face each other for the second time on the night. This time it was Thornton who came away with the victory. With a 3-2 victory over "Super Ted," the Scot captured the title in Portsmouth.
Starting Monday, Sept. 9, the ninth season of the MODUS Super Series begins. A cycle lasts thirteen weeks. The twelve weekly winners eventually get to compete in "Champions Week" in the thirteenth week of play. The winner of Champions Week will receive £25,000 in prize money.
