2017 BDO World Championship finalist Danny Noppert is through to the Lakeside second round after beating Richie Edwards 3-0.

31-year-old Edwards replaced the ill James Hurrell at the last minute, but his World Championship campaign ended at the first hurdle. Noppert cruised to the opening two sets, winning all six legs as he left Edwards in his wake. Noppert's 95.94 first set average was a full 21 points higher than his opponent's, as the Dutchman settled into the tie much quicker. The average dropped by just a single point in set two, and Noppert sealed the two-set advantage with a classy 121 finish.
Edwards was only allowed one dart at a double in the opening two sets. But a 72 checkout in the first leg of the third set got the Welshman on the board, with a break of throw to boot. Noppert, though, was not in a charitable mood. He broke back instantly, and held throw to go 2-1 up, despite Edwards missing two darts at tops to go in front again. Though Noppert's standard had dropped somewhat, his scoring was still too much for the often erratic Edwards to handle. The BDO world number 23 missed bull for a 124 checkout, but did not mess around on 25, and sealed a whitewash win.
After his victory, Noppie will take on BDO world number one and second seed Mark McGeeney in a hotly anticipated second round meeting.
