The English youngster averaged 86 in his whitewash victory in the preliminary round win. Day won the first set without breaking sweat, with the highlight being a 136 checkout.
He continued in the same form in the second set, checking out 132 on the bull to extend his lead. Caldwell, normally an excellent scorer, could only manage an 80 average and one maximum to his opponent's two.
Day was pushed a little more by Caldwell as he approached the finish line, but the New Zealander missed a series of darts to extend the tie. The debutant kept his cool, and will take on 14th seed Martin Phillips in round one.
