Chris Dobey reached his second ProTour final at the weekend losing out to Michael van Gerwen in a contest where he hit a huge average but missed chances. He will take a lot of positives out of it after having a poor 2017.
He spoke to ChronicleLive after his final and admitted that his confidence was high but the missed chances cost him.
Dobey’s aim as a result is to qualify for all of the major TV tournaments and he admits he needs to keep playing well but not think about it like he did last year.
“I am happy with the way I am playing at the minute,” he said. “My confidence is high, I went in and played well and my practice is now paying off.
“I averaged just shy of 110 but the thing is against van Gerwen it is just about hitting your doubles. If I had hit my doubles in the final I would have won it quite comfortably but you can’t afford to miss against Michael.”
He added: “My form is going well and I am starting to get my consistency back which is the key. If I just tighten up on those doubles it will all start to pay off.”
“The main aim is qualifying for all of the major TV tournaments.
“I need to keep playing well and trying not to think about it too much. Last year I think I thought it about too much and it was starting to put me off.
“Trying to know what I had to do every game didn’t help. This year I would rather not know, keep myself away from it, focus on my game and it should hopefully all pay off.”
