Ward denied Max Hopp a third
PDC title as the Derbyshire ace edged out the German 8-7 in the Players Championship final. It's Big H's first senior title. The 21-year-old missed three match-darts in the 14th leg before Hopp forced a leg-decider with a 18-darter. Ward had the throw in the last leg and held his nerves with a 15-darter for the win.
The former BDO World Youth Championship runner-up kicked off the tournament with wins against Vincent Kamphuis (6-3 ) and Madars Razma (6-2), before coming through leg-deciders against James Richardson, Michael Smith and Nathan Aspinall. In the semi-final he beat Jose de Sousa to reach the final, while Hopp overcame Robert Thornton. The Scotsman beat number one seed Michael van Gerwen earlier on the day.
