Explanation of 2020 PDC Pro Tour circuit workings and Prize Money breakdown

The PDC Pro Tour 2020 includes thirteen European Tour tournaments and 30 Player Championship events. This article explains how the Pro Tour system works.

All results are included on an annual basis in the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit. There is also a separate ranking for each of the two above mentioned circuits.

Thirteen European Tour events count towards the Euro Tour Order or Merit. The 32 highest ranked players after the thirteen Euro Tours will participate in the European Championship in Dortmund.

Finally, there is a Players Championship Order or Merit for the 30 Players Championship events. The 64 best players in the Players Championship rankings will participate in the Players Championship Finals at the end of November.

How other majors are affected

For other ranking TV tournaments, such as the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and the World Championship, the entire Pro Tour Order of Merit is considered. So a combination of those three circuits contribute to the overall ranking total.

For example, at the World Championship, besides the 32 best players in the world rankings, the 32 best players of the Pro Tour Order or Merit are also invited. This way, players who perform especially well at the floor tournaments can take part in the major TV tournaments. Only 2019 floor performances count towards the Ally Pally reckoning.

For tournaments that take part in the middle of the year, like the World Matchplay this is different. In the case of the World Matchplay 2020, the 'cut-off' will be on July 5. Then the results on the floor tournaments in the period July 5, 2019 - July 4, 2020 will be examined.

If a player wins a Players Championship event, for example, then they are in the running for three or four tournaments thanks to one win. Josh Payne won a Players Championship tournament four years ago. As a result he was able to participate in the World Matchplay, Players Championship Finals and the World Championship as a result.

Pro Tour rankings are also used to determine the seeded players for Euro Tour tournaments. At every Euro Tour event, the current top 16 of the Pro Tour Order of Merit enter automatically.
