Michael van Gerwen has not been granted a protected ranking for the draw of the Auckland Darts Masters. For this tournament the ranking on the World Series Order of Merit is used.

'Mighty Mike' is currently not in the top four of the World Series ranking. Van Gerwen has not gotten any further this year than quarter-finals on the World Series as he was eliminated in the second round on three occasions.
Reigning world champion Rob Cross is the top seeded player at the Auckland Darts Masters. Gary Anderson, Peter Wright and Michael Smith also received a protected status during the draw. Van Gerwen is currently sixth on the World Series Order of Merit.
For the first time since 2012, the 29-year-old Dutchman is unseeded at a PDC tournament. Six years ago, the two-time world champion won the World Grand Prix as an unseeded player, his first major in the PDC.
