Michael van Gerwen went down in his third group match of the Grand Slam of Darts on Tuesday night. Despite the 4-5 defeat against Ross Smith, Van Gerwen still finished first in the group.

Van Gerwen already saw the mood change when Luke Woodhouse had lost his match to Nathan Rafferty. This allowed Smith to play freely, according to Van Gerwen.

"I saw him change completely," Van Gerwen told Viaplay. "He felt at ease and you could see that reflected in the match."

It resulted in an average of almost 108. "Better than he can actually do, fair is fair," Van Gerwen said. The 107.92 Smith averaged was a new record on TV.

Van Gerwen definitely did not underperform with an average of almost 105, but still lost in the decisive ninth leg. "Little chances you have to take. This is also part of it."
