Chris Dobey advanced to the third round at the World Darts Championship at the expense of William O'Connor. After a spectacle, he edged past William O'Connor 3-2.
It was a true battle between numbers 17 and 38 in the world. This match was the perfect example to show how strong the sport of darts is today in breadth. Dobey recorded an average of 103, compared to 97 for O'Connor. Both players also accounted for seventeen 180 scores.
Including a 100 finish and a 13-darter, Dobey took the first set 3-1. Set two was just 3-1 for O'Connor after a 14-darter, 13-darter and a 15-darter. The third set was the least of the match, but it did go 3-1 to Dobey via a 19-darter.
O'Connor responded by throwing a 10-darter right away in the fourth set and took this set 3-1 thanks to a 105 finish and a 15-darter. The key point ended up being the third leg of the fifth set. O'Connor was not out in five visits, and was broken by Dobey who managed to throw a 70 finish. He then finished it off decisively with a 15-darter for a spot in the next round. A clash with former European Championship winner Ross Smith, the world No. 16, awaits in the next round.
