Kevin Doets produced a stunning result at the
Dutch Darts Masters on Friday night by eliminating former world number champion
Peter Wright in the first round. 'Hawk Eye' triumphed 6-2 against his Scottish opponent.
''I'm very happy,'' Doets told Online Darts afterwards. Was this the biggest win of the Dutchman's career? "Could say so yeah. Especially on a stage like this, in my home country, against the two times world champion it's great. Yeah it's one of my biggest wins I would say."
It didn't take Doets long before he noticed that there was something to be gained against 'Snakebite.' ''Everyone knows he hasn't been his own self the last few months, or maybe the last year," Doets admits. "I wouldn't say that I was happy with the draw because it's still Peter Wright. He can still go up there and smash a 105+ average. But, in the beginning of the game I felt like 'I'm the better player and I will take him'."
In December at the World Darts Championship, Doets also showed something of his class on the big stage. After a fine victory over Stowe Buntz, the Dutchman was close to stunning Michael Smith, but lost out 3-2 in sets.
''That must have been my best game on stage ever," Doets recalls. "I was unfortunate that I lost but just to finally play like how I can. And I know I can still play even better than what I did that game and what I did this game. It's just the confidence lately has been through the roof, like I just feel so comfortable wherever I play."
