Gerwyn Price was arguably the most impressive winner in the opening round of the
Dutch Darts Masters on Friday night as he averaged over 103 in a 6-3 win over Dimitri Van den Bergh.
"I thought I started off quite strong. I mean 4-0 up," Price reviews of his performance in his post-match press conference. "But then sort of fell asleep a bit on on my own legs. Dimitri played pretty well as well, on one one of my legs I think he banged in two 180s and missed a nine-darter but yeah, I'm going in the right direction."
With the Premier League Darts starting soon and the Masters coming up it's a big few weeks for Price. "I practiced with Rob Cross last week and this week. I'm not going to say I'm smashing him in games but I am," he laughs. "But yeah, I'm practicing brilliant backstage but then up there it's different. I try too hard to perform for the crowd."
Over the last few years, Price has consistently been one of the most talked about dart players in the world. Currently however, he's flying somewhat under the radar due to the performances of
Luke Humphries and the rise of
Luke Littler. "It's a kick up the backside," he admits. "I feel a little bit sorry or the other Luke (Humphries ed.) if I'm honest with you. As good as Luke Littler is and the support he deserves, it kind of dampens Luke Humphries being world champion and winning four majors."
On Saturday, Price takes on Kevin Doets in the quarter-finals of the Dutch Darts Masters.
