After breaking records yesterday in reaching the second round of the
European Championship,
Gian van Veen continued his rapid rise on Saturday night seeing off Daryl Gurney 10-6 and is into the Quarter-Finals in Dortmund.
Van Veen was broken in the first leg, but then he took three legs in a row, including a 15-darter and a 16-darter. Gurney could not get into his game because of a gust of wind that raged across the stage, but fired a 12-darter to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
With a 72 finish and a 12-darter, Van Veen led 5-2 after the break. He lost that lead, however, after Gurney managed to throw a 13-darter and a 15-darter.
After the final break, Van Veen threw out 104 for 6-5, before taking an 8-5 lead with a 14-darter and a 54 finish. Gurney narrowed the gap to 8-6 via double 4, but the margin was restored to four by a 14-darter from Van Veen. He then decided the match with a 15-darter for the match.
