Coming through a gruelling encounter with Geert Nentjes,
Leonard Gates seemingly secured himself not just a spot in round 2 at the
PDC World Darts Championship, but a legion of new fans as well.
After delighting the crowd with his dance moves on his way to the stage, Gates had the Ally Pally faithful on his side from the get-go. Despite not playing his best darts, the 52-year-old managed to do enough to secure a victory on debut at the PDC World Darts Championship and secure himself a second round match up with Stephen Bunting.
In his post-match interview on stage with Sky Sports' Polly James, the American was serenaded by "USA, USA, USA" chants from the thousands of new members of the Leonard Gates fan club in attendance at the Alexandra Palace. "Keep it going!" Gates demanded to the crowd and they responded in kind.
Famously, Gates defeated Fallon Sherrock at Madison Square Garden in New York at the New York Darts Masters earlier this year and now he has another big win on the big stage to his name. "I love it here," he says. "This is the Darts Mecca right here. Anybody that loves darts, come here whenever you can."
