On Sunday night, the final of the World Grand Prix will be played. The set format combined with the double-in double-out format makes the event a unique tournament on the PDC calendar.
German darter Lukas Wenig is a fan of the format at the World Grand Prix, he said in an interview with Elmar Paulke on DAZN. ''I especially love the set format. On the one hand, I think it's a shame that the format is only used at the World Grand Prix and the World Darts Championship. But on the other hand, that also makes these tournaments special.''
The set format ensures that it does not matter if, for example, a first set is lost 3-0. The deficit is then not 3-0 in legs, but 1-0 in sets. ''That creates a lot more tension and matches are less quickly played as a result,'' Wenig explained. ''That's why I enjoy watching these two tournaments.''
Because Wenig does not currently hold a PDC Tour Card, he does not have the opportunity to participate in the World Grand Prix. However, it would appeal to him to play a tournament with the double-in double-out format. "Unfortunately, we (the players without a Tour Card, ed.) don't have the opportunity to participate in such tournaments. I'll put it this way, finding a double-in tournament like this borders on rarity. It would certainly be interesting."
Commentator Paulke therefore suggests the idea of using the double-in double-out format every year at one of the Euro Tour tournaments as well. ''It's just a cool format. You shouldn't do that just once a year.''
''However, it shouldn't be too frequent either, because then a tournament like the World Grand Prix loses luster. But more tournaments like this would do the calendar good,'' Wenig added.
