Peter Wright has not had the best twelve months of his career. Despite claiming a TV title at the European Championship in late 2023, the Scot has slipped to 12th in the PDC Order of Merit.
Nowhere were Wright's woes more evident than in the 2024
Premier League Darts campaign. 'Snakebite' finished rock bottom of the league table for the second year running, barely winning a game in the whole season. Nevertheless, Wright, who is never one to shy away from making a big prediction, has claimed another major title is on the way imminently.
"I’ve won loads of titles. It’s not that I’ve got to win them, it's that I want to win them just for myself," says the two-time world champion in quotes collected by
The Sun. "I ain’t got to prove a point to anybody. I will be winning majors this year. I’ll be nicking
Luke Humphries’ pocket money!"
Wright does admit however, that his recent struggles have brought with it some self doubt. Not something you would usually associate with the outwardly exuberant Scot. "You doubt yourself when you are invited to these World Series and other players aren’t. You think they should be here and not me," he admits. "It’s my job to get up there and show why I am here and try and win this title. The quality of darts all around the world is just getting better and better."
"I usually look at the draw to see who I’ve got next. That stung me in the backside at the Matchplay. I looked too far ahead to see how I’d win it," Wright continues. "Now I just look at the player who is in front of me."
Despite his dreadful campaigns the last two Premier League Darts seasons, Wright is determined to get himself back in the fold for the 2025 edition. He knows though, a big end of the year is needed for that to happen. "My target now is just to win titles and this old guy to upset all the youngsters!" Wright concludes. "I can win games again which makes me a pretty dangerous wildcard in any tournament now."
