Damon Heta has set up an intriguing last 16 tie at the World Darts Championship with Scott Williams thanks to a thrilling 4-3 win over Berry van Peer on Friday afternoon.
After having missed a number of match darts in the previous leg, Heta took out a stunning 151 to seal the deal. "I just told myself, 'let's kick on, let's do it. Don't dwell on that,' and that's what I did. I just kicked on," said a relieved Heta in his post-match press conference. "I've been working on the mental game and a positive attitude. It's positive thoughts and stuff like that and yeah, it's helped my game 100%"
After quarter-finals at the World Matchplay, the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship Finals in 2023, Heta can now boast a career-best World Darts Championship performance as a continued sign of his steady progression.
"I kept thinking it's down to me. This is my game, I'm the better player, I'm number 10 in the world, I'm this, I'm that and I did not dwell on the on the bad stuff," he continues. "It feels like it's a very serious business and that's how I feel when I'm up there. I'm up with all the big names and I'm not there for no reason, I'm there to do a job and I've got people relying on me. I've got a lot of support especially back home and I take all that in."
In the last 16, another player making his career-best World Championship run, Scott Williams is waiting. "He's there for a reason. He's obviously quality, you're not in the worlds last 16 if you're a bad player that's for sure," Heta previews. "I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. Stick to my routine and I've got to believe in that, I believe in myself."
