On the first day of the
UK Open 2022 there were some great comebacks.
Ron Meulenkamp was one of the players on the right side of those comebacks. Afterwards he spoke to Dartsnews.com with relief.
'The Bomb' took on Pole Krzysztof Kciuk in the fourth round, who in an exciting match eventually started to distance himself from the Dutchman. Meulenkamp pointed to missed doubles as the cause.
"At one point I had a feeling he was throwing really well, but I was missing first every time. Sometimes three or five darts on a double.''
Meulenkamp was 9-6 down after fifteen legs and knew he had to win four in a row. He needed some support.
"I had the support of Geert Nentjes, Jimmy Hendriks and Maik Kuivenhoven and those guys shouted me through. After all the misery of the last few years, that really helped me."
Coming back from a deficit was not the only challenge the 33-year-old faced on the opening day. The fact that the UK Open is a special tournament is also reflected in the playing schedule, which brings complications.
"With the Pro Tour you know exactly what time you play. It's just a bit more difficult here, especially because there was a long time in between. That definitely makes it difficult to recharge all over again'', Meulenkamp said.
