Michael van Gerwen returns to action Wednesday night at the
World Darts Championship. As always, "Mighty Mike" enters the arena with the rise song Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes.
That song has been the three-time world champion's attendance number for more than a decade. ''That came during the time when Robin van Persie played at Manchester United,'' Van Gerwen explained in conversation with AD.nl. ''Then they sang 'Ooooh, Robin van Peeersieeee'. The same goes for Vincent (van der Voort, ed.). His walk-on is derived from a supporters' song from the time Rafael van der Vaart played at Tottenham Hotspur."
''This is where I feel comfortable and I won a lot with it so that's why I've always kept it that way,'' Van Gerwen continued. The world number two thinks some players have chosen just a boring number.
''Recently (at the Players Championship Finals, ed.) I played against Belgian Mario Vandenbogaerde. He had a Belgian number. Yes, that sounds to the English of course for no meter. As if I would come on stage with André Hazes'', Van Gerwen stated.
