Damon Heta was active at the Belgian Darts Open last weekend. In conversation with Het Nieuwsblad, he was presented with some dilemmas.
Whereas in his early years at the PDC we always saw Heta walking around without a mustache, that has changed in recent months. Mustache or no mustache, then, is the first tough choice. "Mustache, of course! I just think it's very characteristic, you know. People kind of recognize themselves in it or something. I kind of like it, too. As for my wife? She didn't at first, but I think she's gotten used to it and accepts it."
Heta has never managed to win a major. Nor has there ever been a major organized in Australia, Heta's homeland. So the second dilemma is: win a first major or have a major in Australia? "Wow... Maybe just both. Then I'm just going to win that major in Australia!"
'The Heat' is also known for his funny walk-ons, appearing on stage in the past with a lawnmower, dressed up as a cricket player and with a foam hat of fire. Third dilemma: a fun walk-on or play a good game? "I love those walk-ons, but I still prefer to play a good game. I also do those walk-ons mostly for myself, hoping somewhere that the public likes them. But it's something for me to take advantage of. That lawnmower last year? That worked because the singer is from here and the Belgian audience went along with it, but for the rest nobody understood anything (laughs). So today I wanted to keep it a little simpler and they were okay with that here."
Heta lived with Dimitri Van den Bergh in Leicester for several years. So the final dilemma is: Dimitri Van den Bergh or Simon Whitlock (his World Cup of Darts winning teammate)? "Depends on what for!" Heta laughs. "But I'm going to choose Dimi, as always. He's my mate and we lived together for a long time. I consider him family."
