Nathan Aspinall will be the big absentee at this year's Players Championship Finals in Minehead from Nov. 24 to 26. 'The Asp' has not currently qualified and is not going to.
Players can only qualify for the Players Championship Finals via the Players Championship Order of Merit, and on that ranking, Aspinall is currently outside the top-64. The reigning World Matchplay champion can only drop further, as he has not entered the final two Players Championship tournaments of the season.
After 28 of the 30 Players Championship tournaments, Aspinall is only 92nd with £10250 in prize money. The darter from Stockport has simply played far too few floor tournaments this year. Only thirteen times did Aspinall make an appearance, and in those tournaments he also lost six times in the first round, meaning that those participations did not yield any prize money.
My big shot thinks he's so good he can pick and choose which comps to play.
so do virtually all of the players in the top 16, they choose to skip blocks of players championship events or european tour events etc regularly. it's a gruelling schedule otherwise. referring to him as mr big shot is pretty laughable btw, he's one of the most down-to-earth guys on tour.
doubt this will be keeping him up at night given it was obviously a conscious decision not to attend most of the events. it's a pretty minor tournament and he has larger ambitions in mind, plus who knows if he'd have won the matchplay if he'd played all those extra events as well as dealing with well documented stressful life stuff this year? who knows if he'd have aggravated his injury even?
As a ranking Major tournament the Players Championship is far from being a “minor” event. Possibly the hardest Major to win as you compete against the vast majority of the top 128 players over 30 plus qualifying tournaments.
i'm actually sympathetic to that viewpoint, but there's no doubt if people were ranking majors in terms of how meaningful and prestigious they are, there'd be several ahead of it. regardless, a calculated decision can't really be referred to as a "mistake" unless you think this will have some kind of unexpected negative consequences for his career going forward, which seems unlikely.
That would be an interesting question to pose amongst darts fans, the ranking of the ranking events. For me in order of prestige World Championship World Matchplay World Grand Prix Players Championship UK Open European Open GSOD Premier League, Masters, World Series and other invitationals are nice to win (especially the money) but are just promotional events. I would like to see a return of some of the old ranking Majors such as the Las Vegas Desert Classic and get rid rid of the invitationals.
