ON THIS DAY IN ... 2010: Caven beats Van Gerwen in final of Players Championship in Canada

In 'On this day in ...' Dartsnews looks back on an event or performance of a player on a certain date. This time a return to 28 August 2010.

It was the day Jamie Caven won a PDC ranking Tournament for the third time in his career. In the Canadian city of Ontario, because back then the Players Championship tournaments were also played in countries like Canada, United States, Spain and Austria.

Caven started the tournament with two easy wins against local players. First Dave Watson was beaten 6-1 and then John Morrison 6-1 for a place in the last 32. Jabba then took on Steve Evans (6-4) and Justin Pipe (6-4) to reach the quarter-finals.

In the last eight, 'Jabba' was too strong for Andy Hamilton (6-4) and Dennis Priestley (6-2). At the other end of the draw, Michael van Gerwen reached the final after defeating Kevin Painter and Wes Newton, among others.

The final then proved to be a triumph for Caven, who won 6-4. Later on, Caven would win four more PDC titles, giving him a total of seven tournament wins in the PDC.
