Luke Humphries is the new number one in the world after the World Darts Championship. 'Cool Hand Luke' already secured the first position in the rankings by reaching the World final, after rival Michael van Gerwen lost in the quarter-finals.
By winning the world title, Humphries strengthened his lead over number two Michael van Gerwen considerably. 'Mighty Mike' seems to be able to forget about the first position on the PDC Order of Merit at least for the time being. Van Gerwen is already 363,250 pounds behind, and must defend a lot of prize money in the coming year. Humphries still has relatively much to win in 2024, as he will not defend a lot of prize money until 2025.
Michael Smith started the World Darts Championship as the world number one, but has fallen back to third place. His deficit to Van Gerwen is only 26,000 pounds. Nathan Aspinall is the new number four although he is only 250 pounds ahead of Gerwyn Price. Rob Cross has moved up two spots and is now sixth, while Peter Wright has lost four spots and dropped to eighth.
Dave Chisnall is back in the top-10 after reaching the quarter-finals. He has taken over the tenth spot from Damon Heta. Stephen Bunting has just returned to the top-16 after a fine fourth-round run in London. He has moved up two spots. So has Chris Dobey, who makes his debut in the top-16 of the world rankings with a leap to fifteenth place.
Scott Williams is the first player in the rankings to make a huge leap. 'Shaggy' surprisingly made it to the semi-finals at Alexandra Palace after wins over Danny Noppert and Michael van Gerwen, among others. He started the tournament as number 52 in the world, but is now ranked 30th. Behind Williams is the other great fairy-tale of the World Darts Championship. Luke Littler was only 164th on the PDC Order of Merit prior to the event, but after reaching the World Championship final, the 16-year-old is up to 31st in one fell swoop. 'The Nuke' can only go up, as Littler has virtually nothing to defend for the next two years.
Jim Williams (+7), Ricky Evans (+7), Matt Campbell (+9), Boris Krcmar (+10), Cameron Menzies (+9) and Mickey Mansell (+8) also did excellent business. The biggest loser in the rankings is Mervyn King, who was missing from the World Darts Championship. He dropped from 40th place to 63rd, narrowly keeping his PDC Tour Card. James Wade (-6), Gary Anderson (-6), Alan Soutar (-11) and Vincent van der Voort (-11) also had to give up many spots in the rankings.
