This tournament is a unique event on the PDC calendar. The World Grand Prix is the only tournament where the legs are started and ended with a double. Because of this format, the World Grand Prix is known for its surprises, with often early eliminations of big names.
The World Grand Prix was first held in 1998. The prize pool at the time contained £38,000, of which £9,000 was reserved for the winner. By 1999, the prize pool had almost doubled, while in 2004, £100,000 in prize money was made available for the first time.
After that, the available prize money went up rapidly. In 2007, the prize pool was £200,000, followed by £250,000 in 2008. A year later, it even shot up to £350,000, with the winner taking home £100,000.
In 2014, the PDC decided to give more prize money to players in the first rounds. The prize pool went to 400,000, while the winner's cheque remained the same at 100,000. The next increase came in 2019, when the prize pool was raised to 450,000. As of 2022, the prize pool today stands at £600,000. Of that, £120,000 is winner's prize money.
All participating players are guaranteed £7500 in starting money. Second-round losers receive £15,000. The quarter-finalists go home with a minimum of £25,000, the semi-finalists almost one and a half times as much (£40,000). The losing finalist gets a check for £60,000 and the winner thus double.
