Steve Beaton dumps out Michael van Gerwen as semi-finals set at Players Championship 18

Steve Beaton has qualified for the semifinals of Players Championship 18 at the expense of Michael van Gerwen. The 1996 world champion won 6-4 over the three-time world champion.

Beaton managed to break Van Gerwen in the first leg with a 17-darter and then doubled the lead with a 15-darter. Van Gerwen then held his own leg with a 13-darter, before Beaton did the same in the fourth leg. Van Gerwen then closed to 2-3, but then missed two visits to break Beaton in the sixth leg. The Englishman was then able to maintain his break lead with a 19-darter to make it 4-2.

The next three legs also went with the darts, allowing Beaton to throw for the match at a score of 5-4. 'The Bronzed Adonis' did not start the tenth leg well with scores of 48 and 95, while Van Gerwen produced a 180 in his second turn. However, the Dutchman then had two bad scores recorded, allowing Beaton to get closer again. With a 74 finish, Beaton then managed to decide the match.

In the last four, the 60-year-old Beaton will take on Ryan Searle. 'Heavy Metal' was able to deal with Ross Smith (6-5) after a cracker. Both men posted averages well above 100; 106.47 for Searle and 104.72 for Smith.

The other semifinal is between Damon Heta and Cameron Menzies. Heta was responsible for the elimination of Danny Noppert. It was no less than 6-1 for the Australian, who posted an average of 102.00 per turn. Menzies defeated Jim Williams 6-0 for a spot in the semifinals.

A total of 125,000 pounds in prize money is distributed at each Players Championship tournament. The winner of the event will receive a check for 15,000 pounds.
