Sweden surprisingly advanced to the last eight at the World Cup of Darts at the expense of higher-ranked Canada. The winner of the match between Wales and Denmark awaits in the quarter-finals.
There was nothing stolen about the victory. Although Matt Campbell and Jeff Smith did not reach their usual level, that did not detract from the fact that Dennis Nilsson and Oskar Lukasiak came out very strong.
The Swedes achieved an average of 91.44, compared to 87.66 for Canada. The finishes were also excellent for the Swedes: 50% against 26% for the Canadians.
In the fifth leg, Canada took a break lead with a 72 finish, but the Swedish darts players immediately broke back. Via a 20 check-out, they went into the interval with a 4-3 lead.
The next four legs went with the darts, including a 14-darter and an 82 finsh by Sweden. Canada was then broken with a fine 87 finish while Canada was waiting on 52. Nilsson and Lukasiak then got the job done with a 62 finish for the match.
