The 24th Players Championship tournament of the 2024 season is underway in Wigan and already for some big names, their tournament is over.
Ted Evetts created a huge surprise right away in the opening round by eliminating former world champion and world number one, Michael Smith 6-2. Elsewhere, Rowby-John Rodriguez triumphed 6-5 against Luke Woodhouse, while Alan Soutar and Gabriel Clemens went down against Graham Usher (6-2) and Darren Beveridge (6-4), respectively.
The performance of the early matches however, has come from Dirk van Duijvenbode. The Dutchman achieved an average of 108.23 in this match. Boulton was even just above that with an average of 108.55. Van Duijvenbode opened the match with an 11-darter, but saw the next three legs all go to Boulton. Van Duijvenbode then produced a 14-darter and a 15-darter to rebalance the match. Then the turbo went on for the Dutchman. Van Duijvenbode threw a 14-darter to regain the lead before closing with two 12-darters. In addition to an average of over 108, Van Duijvenbode also managed to produce no fewer than seven 180 scores.
The likes of Andrew Gilding, Joe Cullen, Willie Borland, Christian Kist and Ryan Joyce were also among the early winners.
