Late last month,
Michael van Gerwen and
Vincent van der Voort met at the Dutch Darts Masters. The pair have long been close friends.
Given the fact Van Gerwen and Van der Voort have been best friends for years, it was an emotionally charged duel that Van Gerwen eventually managed to win 6-1. A new blow for Van der Voort, who has been searching for confidence for months.
"I think it's terrible to see him like this," Van Gerwen told Sportnieuws.nl. "But you also have to face reality. It's very difficult with him. It's also up to us to do something about this together. But that will come, the year is still long."
Van der Voort has now dropped to 53rd place in the world rankings, and so his PDC Tour Card could be in jeopardy by the end of the year. "Vincent is of course my mate, but nothing is running with him. He already has trouble getting his darts straight into the board at all," Van Gerwen said.
"Then you should really just be proud of him that he still gathered all the will and courage to just make the best of it. That also marks his winner's mentality."
