Last weekend
Michael van Gerwen managed to win a tournament for the first time this year. Fellow dart player
Vincent van der Voort agrees that Van Gerwen really needed this win.
Van Gerwen won the Nordic Darts Masters last weekend by defeating Fallon Sherrock 11-7 in the final. Afterwards, the Dutchman burst into tears. "It seems to be fashionable to start crying after a win. Peter Wright did it at the World Matchplay, John Henderson at the World Cup of Darts and now Michael. But it is understandable, for Michael it was a huge weight off his shoulders," said Van der Voort at RTL 7.
Adding value to a tournament
"For years he was carried around, won everything and was doing incredibly well. But suddenly the machine stopped and he was criticized a lot. Of course, he partly brought that on himself, but you could see how deep he was sometimes in. For Michael this is a very important victory, a few years ago he would not have attached much value to this tournament," says Van der Voort.
Self-confidence
Van der Voort hopes that this puts Van Gerwen back on the right track. "For his self-confidence this tournament is great. Hopefully now everything together clicks again and he will start winning big tournaments again."
