Van Gerwen and Wright through to second round in Coventry, Durrant dumped out by Jones

The action in the first round at the Players Championship Finals is coming towards its conclusion with Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright through their opening ties of the tournament.

Van Gerwen has began his title defence by seeing off Darius Labanauskas in a 6-3 win with a 103.3 average, 6/7 on the doubles and a high checkout of 156 as he looks to add his second TV title of the season this week ahead of the World Championship.

For Wright, it wasn't as comfortable with the World Champion surviving a close shave against 'The Barber' Ryan Meikle.

He edged past the Development Tour standout in a 6-5 win with a 104.8 average and 6/6 on the doubles with Meikle hitting a 101.3 average in defeat.

While over on Stage Two, Wayne Jones extended Glen Durrant's poor run as of late with a 6-3 win over the Premier League champion. 'The Wanderer' impressed with a 100 average, five 180's and 55% on the doubles.

While Madars Razma and Jeffrey de Zwaan are also through with victories over Chris Dobey and Darren Webster to begin their campaigns.
