Michael van Gerwen continues to reign supreme in Premier League Darts. After weekly titles in Dublin and Exeter, 'Mighty Mike' captured his third consecutive weekly title in Liverpool on Thursday night.
With comfortable wins over Jonny Clayton (6-2) and Peter Wright (6-1), Van Gerwen easily reached the final match. In the final against Michael Smith, however, the Dutchman had to dug deep.
After an early break lead, Van Gerwen took a 3-1 lead via a 14-darter, but then Smith took control of the match. 'Bullyboy' fought his way back to 3-3 with a 111 finish and a 12-darter and then took over the lead with an 11-dart leg.
However, Van Gerwen broke back in turn and took a 5-4 lead with two 14-darters in a row. Smith missed a chance on the bullseye for 5-5, after which Van Gerwen finished off the match as he landed his dart in the double 10.
With this triumph in the Beatle City, Van Gerwen is now eight points in front in the Premier League Darts with 20 points. Smith managed to take over second place from Nathan Aspinall through his final spot.
